Licensed Plumber JargonLicensed plumbers have a special language. The following plumbing terms are often used in commercial and residential plumbing, by licensed and master plumbers. It you are using a plumbing company, they may user many often following specialized terms: ABS : A strong black pipe usually of plastic for drainage. Aerator : Mixes fluid and water at the end of a faucet. This reduced the splashing. Air Lock : In plumbing, Block in the liquid flow. Especially on the suction side. Angle Stop : A shut off valve, usually between the pipe and the faucet. The pipe in the wall and its outlet angel of 90 degrees turns up to the faucet. Anode Rod : A rod installed in the heater that keep the tank from corroding. Anti-Siphon : Keeps the back flow of liquid from going into the plumbing system. Often used in sprinkler systems. BTU : Plumbers use this to describe how much energy that it takes to get 1 lb. of water 1 degree warmer. Back Flow Preventer : This is a simple device that keeps the water from traveling back into the main system. Back Pressure : Pressure that prevents the flow of backward fluid in a plumbing system. Backwater Valve : Sewer and plumbing line valve keeps the sewage from traveling back into the residence. Ball Check Valve : A special valve that is used to prevent the improper flow of plumbing. Ballcock : A fill valve that steers the flow of liquid inside of plumbing. for example in a gravity-operated plumbing situation like toilets. Basin Wrench : A special wrench for plumbers with a very long handle designed to swivel the jaws to access nuts that are fastened to a previously installed tank. A wrench with a long handle with jaws mounted on a swivel that allows the jaws to reach and handle nuts to fasten faucets to a previously installed sink. Blowbag : A tools using a hose fitting and a nozzle. The device can be used to clear out a clogged drain pipe. These plumbing specific terms are again used frequently in commercial plumbing and also in residential plumbing. Many licensed or master plumbers will use this specific jargon. It you are planning on calling upon a plumbing company, educate yourself as much as possible to get comfortable with these terms.
